Vital Sine Refractometer

Vital Sine Refractometer

Keeping salinity levels in check is very important in a saltwater aquarium, especially in a smaller one such as a nano reef. Fluctuating salinity levels can be disastrous, and because nano reefs are small in size, it is much easier for water conditions to change quickly. If you don't monitor salt levels closely in a nano reef tank, you could end up with a very big problem.

Usually, the recommended way to measure salinity in a reef aquarium is with a traditional swing arm hydrometer, such as The Instant Ocean Hydrometer, however swing arm hydrometers tend to be very inaccurate and unreliable. When it comes to taking care of my nano reef, I like to use as accurate and reliable equipment as possible, and for measuring salinity I have turned to the Vital Sine Refractometer.

The Vital Sine Refractometer is one of the sharpest, most accurate refractometers on the market. It features a large and sharp display scale to provide the most accurate salinity and specific gravity readings, up to ±1.0% salinity and ±0.001 specific gravity. Additionally, built of durable stainless steel and protected with tough rubber, the Vital Sine Refractometer is built to last.

What makes the Vital Sine Refractometer really great though is its usability. Calibration is easy with the built-in calibration ring, and taking measurements of salinity and specific gravity are extremely simple. Shifts in ambient temperature (from 10°- 30°C) are also automatically compensated for, making the Vital Sine Refractometer a no-brainer to use, especially for those of us who would rather spend time watching our nano reefs instead of messing with testing equipment.

Pinpoint Electronic Nitrate Monitor

Pinpoint Electronic Nitrate Monitor

Measuring nitrate levels is a daily chore with a nano reef aquarium, and using traditional chemical test kits gets messy and annoying. Fortunately, for those of us who don't have the time or patience to deal with matching up colors and making guesses at the level of nitrates in the nano reef, there is a faster and more convenient solution.

The Pinpoint Nitrate Monitor is an electronic meter that, when the probe is inserted into the aquarium, gives an extremely accurate reading of nitrate levels of 0-10 ppm. It is accurate up to ± 1 ppm when properly calibrated with the Pinpoint Nitrate Monitor Calibration Solution (not included). Nitrate readings are displayed on the large LCD screen, so there is no guessing involved or colors to match up. You get a precise reading of nitrate levels every single time you use the Pinpoint Nitrate Monitor.

Included with the Pinpoint Electronic Nitrate Monitor are a probe, display unit with large LCD screen, and a probe protector. The nitrate monitor runs on a 9V battery, which is not included.

24 Gallon AquaPod Aquarium

24 Gallon AquaPod Aquarium

The 24 Gallon AquaPod is a step up from the 12 Gallon AquaPod, and has everything the 12g has, but on a larger scale to accommodate the larger size and water volume. It has the seamless, panoramic curved glass that makes the AquaPod series so great, as well as the quality construction and carefully selected aquarium components that have earned the AquaPod a top-notch reputation in the nano reef world.

The AquaPod 24 has slightly upgraded compact fluorescent than the 12g AquaPod has, and features a 64 watt lighting system with 1-32W square pin Dual Daylight 10000°K/6700°K bulb and 1-32W square pin Dual Actinic 460nm/420nm bulb. This lighting setup illuminates all corners of the AquaPod, and provides ample light for most corals, fish, and invertebrates. However, for the most light-demanding corals and invertebrates such as SPS and clams, a more intense light such as the SunPod HQI is recommended.

A full tank shot of a well-stocked AquaPod 24

The balance of daylight and actinic ensures a good color of light in the aquarium and healthy nano reef inhabitants. Like the AquaPod 12 gallon, the Aquapod 24 has a set of blue LEDs for viewing the aquarium at night and simulating moonlight to encourage nighttime behavior of fish and inverts. Additionally, electronic ballasts and integrated cooling fans ensure cool and quiet operation of the AquaPod.

The 24 Gallon AquaPod has an efficient built-in filtration system with mechanical and biological filtration aspects so you get the forms of filtration needed to have a healthy and clean nano reef aquarium. An upgraded 290 gallons per hour submersible water pump ensures that water is circulated throughout the AquaPod properly and water current is directed where it needs to be the most. A surface-skimming overflow intake system also works to keep the aquarium's water sparkling clean and clear.

The AquaPod series of aquariums never fails to amaze thousands of nano reefers around the world, myself included, and the AquaPod 24 Gallon Aquarium has once again proven the quality and reliability of AquaPod systems.

SunPod HQI Metal Halide Fixture

SunPod HQI Metal Halide Fixture

In a nano reef, compact fluorescent lighting is enough for lower-light corals and invertebrates such as mushrooms and zoanthids, but for more light-demanding stuff such as SPS and clams, you need more powerful lighting such as the SunPod HQI Metal Halide Fixture. Ideal for nano reef systems with SPS and other highly photosynthetic animals, the SunPod HQI provides 150 watts of brilliant light with 14000°K double-ended lamps.

AquaPod HQI with SunPod
The 24 gallon AquaPod HQI with SunPod.

The SunPod is perfect for nano reef aquariums like the 24 gallon AquaPod or Nano Cube that require high amounts of light. The SunPod fixture simply sits on the aquarium with the included docking mounts, reside inside a canopy, or it can even hang pendant-style over the aquarium. Additionally, highly-efficient cooling fans and an electronic ballast keep operation cool, so your nano reef's temperature isn't drastically affected by the usually-hot Metal Halide lighting.

And, if you need even more wattage, there is the SunPod Pro HQI, which provides 100 more watts of lighting than the regular SunPod HQI, for a total of 250 watts. This is more than enough lighting for even the most light-hungry nano reef critters, especially clams and SPS. Both versions of the SunPod include an integrated lunar light system with 6 blue and 6 white LEDs, so you can watch what goes on in your nano reef at night and encourage nocturnal behavior.

Aragamax Aquarium Sand

Aragamax Aquarium Sand

Aragamax Aquarium Sand is the ideal nano reef aquarium sand. It is a smooth, round, superfine sand that is gentle on nano reef inhabitants and easily passes through the gills of sand-sifting organisms such as gobies. Since gobies are so popular in nano reefs, and they need fine sand for their sand-sifting habits, Aragamax sand is the ideal kind.

Additionally, Aragamax Aquarium Sand is pure and safe with no metals, ash, or silica. It also naturally aids in nitrate reduction, so you won't have anything else contributing to nitrate levels. In a small aquarium such as a nano reef, things like this are important for optimum nano reef health and happiness.

And, if mixed with some South Pacific Live Sand, Aragamax substrate will quickly become populated with beneficial creatures and bacteria that act as a biological filter. In a nano reef, live rock and sand are quite often the main biological filter, and having a good amount of both is essential. 1 to 1.5 pounds of live rock per gallon of aquarium water volume, and 1/2 pound of live sand per gallon would be sufficient.
